I previously worked for an AV company and we disabled the Windows Defender stuff there. Thanks in advance.Įdit: Yes I do understand that a firewall is needed, I'm just asking if Windows Firewall is needed if you have other solutions in place, like hardware firewalls, a cloud based AV/Firewall, etc. If anybody has any information, great articles and whatnot that would be much appreciated. My IT director wants me to look for pros/cons of Windows Defender Firewall, any case studies or anything to help make a decision one way or another. On top of that, I've looked at our GPO's and one domain in particular had about 20 different GPO's that had firewall settings for whatever application. Also found out that with a VPN software, it may have to be un/reinstalled a couple of times to work, as Windows Firewall doesn't register it properly. I just found out today that some special hardware/software that's used was being blocked by the Windows Firewall and that they had to open whatever port on there to make it work. I've had to open ports up to make an ITSM work. However it seems to get in the way more often than not. From my understanding, this is enabled for an "extra layer" of security. We run Windows 10 machines which have Windows Defender Firewall enabled. We have whatever network protection, probably a firewall somewhere in there as well. We have a cloud based AV and possibly firewall on that as well. I've only been with my current company a few months, so I'm still learning all the ins and outs. However I'm just not sure how it's helpful in our environment. Ok I realize that can be loaded and the answer can be "It depends".
